two sizes: 5 1/4" and 3 1/2". Older PCs use the 5 1/4", while newer PCs
use the 3 1/2". You can also find PCs that have a combination of both.
The floppy drive uses a
floppy disk,
which is considered to be permanent storage. The floppy drive uses the same
method to store data on your floppy disk as a cassette recorder uses to store
date on a cassette tape.
